Something I'm proud of home Hokkaido is the food!

お客さんと一緒に北海道をまわっていると、食事の時間が楽しい。北海道では、見たこともない、食べたこともない物体や海鮮物に遭遇する機会が多く、これは何？これはどうやって食べるの？という質問がとびかいます。ロウファットだし、プレゼンテーションもいい、ということで好評の北海道フード、地元の自慢です。



On our bike trip in Hokkaido most of the time we eat at the accommodations we are staying. The foods they provide come in a great quantity, and the quality of the food is also impressive!

よく聞かれるのが、いつもこんな食事を食べてるの？という質問。ツアー中は民宿や旅館の食事が続くので日本人は普段からこういう食事を食べてるのか、と思うらしい。そうだったらいいけど、実際違いますよね。

I often get asked by clients a question "is this normal? do you eat like this everyday?" I wish we do but no, unfortunately. The food like this is very special. If we try to prepare a meal like this at home it would take a whole day for the preparation.

というわけで外国の方々のために、一般家庭の食事の一例です。というか我が家のある日の夕食です。
So what is a normal home meal like?



This is a dinner my mum cooked for the last night I was home last month. Because it was my last night she made bit more efforts into this than she'd normally do (thanks mum!).

ちなみにこの日は私の札幌ファイナルナイトだったので、いつもより品数多め。（ありがとう・・・お母さん！）
そして、メインはザンギ。北海道では唐揚げのことをザンギと言ったりします。うちでは、衣に卵がはいってたらザンギ、入ってなかったら普通の唐揚げ、と区別しているようですが、ザンギの解釈の仕方は多様みたいです。北海道では給食のメニュー、スーパーから居酒屋まで、あらゆるところに登場する、人気メニューです。

It's just an example of one home dinner... If you ever have a chance to homestay in Japan please do! It will be an interesting experience, eating what locals eat, sleeping in futon and bathing like Japanese etc. etc. Fun!

Jandals

Did you know the word "jandals" (that's how kiwi people call flip-flops) derive from Japanese sandals? I read the book "Kiwi Speak" by Justin Brown and he says so in his book! Another connection between New Zealand and Japan.

It's getting warmer and warmer every week here. Today's highest was 14 degrees, and it's going to get even warmer tomorrow. It's time to get my jandals out I think!

そろそろビーサンを登場させてあげてもいい時期じゃないですか？

ニュージーランドでは、このビーチサンダルのことをjandal=ジャンダルと呼びます。他の英語圏の国ではflip-flopとか、thongsと言うらしいのだけれど、Kiwiは独自の呼び方をするんです。

なんでだろう・・・って前から思ってたんですが、このKiwi Speakという本によると、Japanese sandals=日本の草履のようなサンダル、の省略形で、ジャンダルになったそうです。

こんな意外なところでつながっていた、日本とニュージー。新しい発見でした！

Christchurch cycling

Now I'm back in Christchurch cycling to get myself around town. Having been away for a while I've come to realise how good the Christchurch cycling is!

Japan doesn't really have cycling lanes in cities like Christchurch does. There are more and more new lanes developed by Christchurch City Council who has been putting a lot of efforts into the project.

There are lots for Japan to learn from this exercise, and I hope cities in Japan become more friendly to cyclists like Christchurch!



クライストチャーチに帰ってきてチャリ通勤をしていて改めて思います。
いい町だなーと。

クライストチャーチはhillyなエリアもありますが、市街はほぼフラット。市役所がかなり力を入れて、市内サイクリングの振興につとめています。新しいサイクリングレーンもどんどんできているし、レーンにガラスが落ちていたらレポートしてください、なんていうホットライン番号まであります。すごくないですか？！

でも私がひとつ日頃から恐れているのは、
自転車レーン左側に駐車してある車たち。
通りすがりに突然ドアを開けられると大変なことになります。

そんな事故をふせぐため、ドライバーがこちらに気づきやすいように、
明るい色のギアを身につけること。
これはこの国ではたくさんの人が実行しているようです。
派手なウエア、普及しています。
私も彼らに見習って目立つカラーのウエアで今日もチャリつうです。

Back in NZ and shifting

I'm back in cold, cold New Zealand!
Well, it's not as bad as it sounds.

Because I've just been to a new office/depot that we are moving into next month.

The Adventure South office is moving!
It is an exciting move for us, into a bigger, newer, and better premises.

More details to come, regarding the new address etc...

ニュージーランドに戻ってきました。
夏の暑い日本から、冬の寒いニュージーへ。。

というと、ちょっとbadに聞こえますが、
そんなこともありません！
アドベンチャーサウスのオフィスが移動します。

来月末、お引っ越しです。

今日、早速ニューオフィスを見に行ってきました。
今のデポ（倉庫）兼オフィスよりも大きく&新しめな物件です。

夏の忙しいシーズンが始まる前に移転するとのこと、
楽しみです。詳細はまた後日アップデートします。

This is a bit personal, but I've also moved into a new home! I cannot help showing off the view from my little unit, so here it is...


そして私事ですが、ニュージーに帰ってきて早々、
新居にお引越しをしました。
2009/10シーズンのマイルームからの景色は、絶景です。
写真でおすそわけです。
